Jon Hopkins – “Open Eye Signal” + New Album Announcement!! [Downtempo//Electronica]

Jon Hopkins

This is definitely a digression into something much more mellow and different then we’re used to. But London producer Jon Hopkins is impossible to ignore, with a deep beating, minimal style that takes his audiences on a journey with each and every track. With the announcement of his new album, Immunity, which will be happening June 4th. Jon Hopkins’ music is slow to build, but impossible to not be drawn into. With a dynamic array of constantly shifting, appearing and disappearing layers, he creates a musical canvas that simply begs your mind to become lost in. This new track, “Open Eye Signal” is our little glimpse into what the new album holds.

Speaker for the Dead – Earth Eyes EP (FREE DL!!) [Glitch-Hop//Trap]

Speaker for the Dead - Earth Eyes EP

It’s time to get back on the local music track. And there could not be a better way then with this hot new two-tack Earth Eyes EP from one of our Philly favorites, Speaker for the Dead. It’s always good to have constant reminders of how hard the Philadelphia collective Glitch Squad is killing it, and it’s impossible to not be reminded with how often these guys are putting out amazing new material. “Earth Eyes” definitely takes the cake for me here, a high-energy trapped out track with still a large amount of glitch-hop stylings and an overall unique perspective on the genre that gives it that true future bass feel we have come to love and expect from Glitch Squad. That being said, do not even think about skipping over “Escape Velocity”. And what better reason not to than that this EP is FREE like almost all of Glitch Squad’s music. Enjoy!!

Empire of the Sun – “Alive” + Official Music Video & New Album Announcement!! [Indie//Synthpop]

Empire of the Sun

This is a name I have actually been seeing on a surprisingly good amount of festival lineups this Summer: Empire of the Sun. I guess it makes good sense though considering they have officially announced the release of their full-length new album, Ice on the Dune, for June 18th this Summer. If you aren’t too familiar with the Australian electronic rock act, they got some talk going with their debut album Walking on a Dream in 2008, most notably their songs “Walking on a Dream” - which many of you would probably recognize as the sample from Wiz Khalifa‘s “The Thrill” – and “We Are the People”. I will have to also personally recommend “Half Mast”, my personal favorite from the first album. Empire of the Sun is also known for their great outfits, which they can be seen wearing in almost all their music videos as well as at each performance. As I said, this Summer they will be taking the stage alongside Passion Pit quite a few times, which I think is appropriate, giving I have always sort of seen Empire of the Sun as a Passion Pit and MGMT fusion. Check it out for yourself though.

Sonic Bloom 2013

Sonic Bloom 2013 Website // Buy Tickets // Full Lineup

Okay, so I am here today to deliver the welcoming news of a beautiful festival, in the far away amazing world of Colorado. That festival would be Sonic Bloom, and while it may be a bit of a track for our Philadelphia readers, the festival represents an aspect of the electronic music that we don’t see a lot of representation for here in The City of Brotherly Love. The lineup displays a wide array of music that could be classified as anywhere from psy-trance, to dub, glitch-hop, electrofunk, simply bass, or just about anything else in that spectrum that comes to mind. The festival will be taking place from June 13th-16th this Summer, in it’s homespot of Shadow’s Ranch in Georgetown Colorado. With a whopping array of artists including Opiuo, VibeSquaD, Random Rab, Minnesota, The Polish Ambassador, Bluetech, Orchard Lounge, Phutureprimitive, TRUTH, Andreilien (previously known as Heyoka), ill.Gates, Wick-It the Instigator, Love & Light, Govinda, Thriftworks, Robotic Pirate Moneky, Unlimited Aspect (Unlimited Gravity and Project Aspect), Russ Liquid, Cry Wolf and still plenty more, this festival bleeds an amazing time. Just check out the 2012 festival recap below, as well as a featured playlist with music from artists exclusively on the 2013 lineup!! And be sure to hurry up because tickets are going fast!

Album Review: Coyote Kisses – Thundercolor EP + “Changing Guard” FREE DL!! [Glitch-Hop//Electrofunk]

Coyote Kisses - Thundercolor EP

This release has seen the light of day for a bit now, but it’s been looping periodically on my computer almost for a week now, so I feel it still warrants a post. And while some of you have already stumbled upon the new Thundercolor EP from Virginia-based production team Coyote Kisses, I am sure there are a few of you, at least, out there who will be very pleased after giving this album a listen. The style is mellow, yet far from minimal, and psychedelic in a dreamy and melodic, yet welcoming way. Comparable to artists like Seven Lions, Ghostland Observatory, and Michal Menert – I know that sounds like a confusion fusion- the group still remains far removed from anything I can say I have yet to hear. 5 out of 5 stars, this is freaking awesome.

The Polish Ambassador – Ecozoic (FREE DL!!) [Glitch-Hop//Electronic]

The Polish Ambassador - Ecozoic

Oh man is it a beautiful day for music. Let’s take a break from the heavy, cause I’ve got some real nice funky tunes for you guys here. I’m sure many of you already know this, but Philadelphia is actually the home of talented producer The Polish Ambassador. He’s been throwing down groovy sets here in The City of Brotherly Love for years now, and I think I can speak for most people when I say it’s good to see him starting to get some serious national and global recognition. His newest album, Ecozoic, was released just a few days ago and features a humongous roster of new grooves. It’s actually a double album, so there’s plenty to choose from, and plenty of time to pass while jamming out to these funky tunes. Not to mention, TPA is actually being generous enough to give away the album at the “name your price” album. So if you’re broke, that means you can snag it for FREE; but hey, show some love for your local talent and give this man the support he deserves! Enjoy!

JXLBeats - The Art of the Chop EP

Make way for some local music!! JXLBeats left us absolutely stunned with his first release, the I Go Where the Trees Go EP. If you like it gangster, then check out “Robberies, Aggies, Attempts and Extortion”; if you like it funky, then I’ll have to recommend “Make Your Bread”; and if you like it chill, well you’ve got the rest of the EP to choose from. An-Ten-Nae – “When I Shut My Eyes” (FREE DL!!) [Glitch-Hop//Bass]

An-Ten-Nae

When it comes to smooth kicking glitch-hop and mellow bass music, An-Ten-Nae is certainly a name to be recognized. He just recently released his debut album Raindrops on Roses, to amazing reception and for obvious reasons if you’ve given it a listen. He dropped this new, FREE track through his Soundcloud today to help support the album. “When I Shut My Eyes” has a strong hip-hop basis, but with a lot of glitch and trip-hop influence, giving the track a really spacey and psychedelic feel.

Freddy Todd – Moonflavours (FREE DL!!) [Glitch-Hop//Bass]

Freddy Todd

Time to mellow out and enjoy some smooth beats. If you’re feeling that vibe, then Freddy Todd has definitely got you with his new album Moonflavours. It’s chocked full of laid-back, airy beats. And the music world is so gracious lately; this one’s up for FREE download as well! Freddy Todd has definitely showed off a lot of talent in the bass world, but he definitely shows off a new set of skills with this album, churning out glitchy, trip-hop tracks, which still maintain plenty of dub and bass elements. You definitely don’t want to pass this one up.

Baths – “Ironworks” + “Miasma Sky” [Glitch//Electronic]

Baths

This is definitely some of the most exciting news we’ve had coming from the indie electronic music world in quite a while ago. Not too long ago, California producer and musician, Baths announced, in an interview with Pitchfork, that he had begun work on a followup to his inspirational first album Cerulean. Now we have the second track to be released from the album, “Ironworks”; a slow-paced glitchy track that remains loyal to Baths’ sound, while it also strays into some heavier instrumentation, most noticeably on the bass lines for this track. We’ve also included the first track, “Miasma Sky”, which was featured with the Pitchfork article, and shows off a more upbeat Baths style. Both tracks certainly bode well for the coming album!Web
