DYNOHUNTER is a group that is still rather new to me, but that being said, I’m getting myself acquainted rather rapidly. The three-piece jamtronica act gets my ears smiling and my feet kicking with each and every track. Their last release, the Pilgrimage EP, was a sure sign that these guys were to be kept an eye on. As a result, we have this fresh new track from the Colorado-based group. It’s called “Gotta Do Wit It” and is a energetic new nu-disco style track, still maintaining plenty of funk and jazz elements. The sax in this song goes off! And yes, it’s all yours for FREE!
This release has seen the light of day for a bit now, but it’s been looping periodically on my computer almost for a week now, so I feel it still warrants a post. And while some of you have already stumbled upon the new Thundercolor EP from Virginia-based production team Coyote Kisses, I am sure there are a few of you, at least, out there who will be very pleased after giving this album a listen. The style is mellow, yet far from minimal, and psychedelic in a dreamy and melodic, yet welcoming way. Comparable to artists like Seven Lions, Ghostland Observatory, andMichal Menert– I know that sounds like a confusion fusion- the group still remains far removed from anything I can say I have yet to hear. 5 out of 5 stars, this is freaking awesome.
We’ve got an interesting collaboration for you guys here today from two East Coast artists. The first is one you’re probably familiar with if you’ve been with us a while: North Carolina producer and musician Cry Wolf. He’s been on our radar for a while now, and actually just signed with Le Castle Vania‘s label, Always Never Records. Having collaborated on this track, which is released through the new label, with local New Jersey producer Aylen. The influence of the two artists blend together in a way that creates a very unique and original sound, almost like an upbeat trancey anthem, except with this deep, churning level of bass-filled filth grumbling below the synth line. And of course you can snag it up FREE! Get at it!
Alright, let’s get a little funky and weird. If you enjoy the saxophone talents of GRiZor Dominic Lalli in Big Gigantic, then I’ve got something I think you’ll really enjoy. Boulder, Colorado based trio DYNOHUNTER has just put out their new, entirely free Pilgrimage EP. The trio is made up of Clark Smith, producer and saxophonist, Justin Ehmer on drums, and Fred Reisen on the bass and synths. Now, while I use the element of a nice jammy sax to compare these guys to Big G and GRiZ; I urge you to not just take their sound on that word. These guys are a whole lot more, and their sound is clear and well-developed. It resonates in the jamtronica category, and while it can get really deep into its electronic elements, DYNOHUNTER always manages to bring its track back to some beautiful live instrumentation as well.
Last week in our festival preview we discussed one of the titans: Coachella. Well this week, we’ve got the lineup for another indisputably mighty name when it comes to the music festival world. Yes, I’m talking of course about Electric Forest, up in beautiful Rothbury, Michigan. The festival is put on each year by one of the oldest (and easily most classic) jam bands in the game: The String Cheese Incident. If you don’t know about these guys- especially if you enjoy jam music- you need to get out to a show; and The Forest is the perfect opportunity, offering a show from the Boulder, Colorado group all three nights of the festival. Not to mention an incredible supporting lineup, including Pretty Lights, Passion Pit, Knife Party, Lotus, Beats Antique, A-Trak, Grimes, Holy Ghost!, EOTO, Kill the Noise, Emancipator, Baauer, NOISIA, Michal Menert, Suckerpunch, Up Until Now, Moon Hooch, Helicopter Showdown, and yes, plenty more (not to mention that wonderful side not of “plus more to be announced”). I know we’re hoping to make this our first trip to the forest, and we certainly hope to see some friendly faces there!
I was first introduced to Aquadrop when he released his Synthesized Landscapes from Future EPthrough Philadelphia record label Seclusiasis; and, oh what a wonderful introduction that was. So today, I’m very pleased to be bringing you a brand new, FREE!, tune from the incredibly talented Italian producer. This one’s got a really uplifting, and upbeat feel to it. The only real way I can really describe Aquadrop’s music is as beautiful synths swirling around in your ears.
The first I heard of Apashewas that dirty trap tune “Bubble Gun” he put down with SNAILS. Needless to say, I was hooked. So when I saw that the Canadian producer had a track with Dabin on his new Awakening EP, I knew I had to check it out. The track is absolutely relentless, and so is this entire release. If you didn’t know Dabin’s name before now, I’m sure it’ll stick in your memory. Enjoy!
Seven Lions has definitely been one the most impressive up and comers I’ve seen in the bass scene the past few months. So it’s not much of a surprise that the California producer got nabbed up pretty quickly for a record release by the folks over at OWSLA. However, this new release, the Days to Come EP, shows a side of Seven Lions that I have yet to be introduced to. While the release is certainly still solid, I was ultimately disappointed with the over presence of influence of electro house on the tracks. I prefer the dubstep that this man producers, but admittedly, it’s good to see artists trying new things, and in fairness, there is still a clear representation of dubstep as well. That being said, the final track, “She Was” shows a glitch-hop element that is absolutely mind-blowing (and dare I say, reminds me somewhat of Tipper?) That might be a bold statement, but nonetheless, it’s easily my favorite and the most unique track off this release. You can stream the full thing below completely free for your listening pleasure! Enjoy!
Borgore w/ The White Panda @ Theatre of the Living Arts [8PM//$23]
If you’re a basshead like us, you probably already know about the face-melting show that will be appearing at the Theatre of the Living Artsthis Saturday: Borgore. The Israeli dubstep producer, and ex-metal drummer, is making his return to Philadelphia to blast faces and blow speakers. If you’re familiar with Borgore’s music, then I probably don’t have to explain the grimefest that you’re all in for; but if you’re not, I’ve included a little clip from last year’s throw down (at the very same venue)!
Nadia Ali w/ Starkillers @ SoundGarden Hall [8:30PM//$20]
However, the reality is simply that we are not all bass heads. So, if you’re looking for a more chilled out night of great dance tunes- and honestly, a way sicker venue- then you definitely want to check out SoundGarden Hall, where the man Jack Deezlwill be opening for the mighty Nadia Ali, also alongside Starkillers. SoundGarden Hall is new on the map in Philadelphia, and their opening night with Figurewas absolutely phenomenal. With an incredibly stacked lineup, and one of the nastiest in-house light setups I’ve seen in a venue thus far, the night promises to be packed full of good times.
