I’ve been really digging the funky tunes lately, and one name that you just can’t seem to get around when talking about funky glitch-hop tunes is Denver’s own Project Aspect. The young producer has been lighting up the electronic music world lately with a relentless arc of mob worthy tunes. Now he just dropped his “Live 2013 Winter Mix” on the world, featuring a slew of brand new, unreleased material, as well as quite a few of the the producer’s already noteworthy and grooving tunes. The best part of course is that you can snag the whole mix up totally FREE so you can take it on the go with you. Enjoy!!
Alright we’ve got an absolutely massive release here from Firepower Records. This one comes from Dallas producer AFK, who has been rampaging his way through the scene lately. Plus the new Killionaire EP features multiple appearances from fellow Dallas producer Spenca, as well as Philadelphia based artists Messinian. With a release chocked that full of talent, how could you possibly go wrong? Well you couldn’t, and every single track on this new EP is complete fire… firepower that is. Enjoy!
Philadelphia native producer, and veteran DJ, Flufftronix just dropped this banger on us today. It’s called “Feel the Love” and it’s got an awesome glitchy beat over some really nice trap undertones. This one definitely boggles my mind when it comes to landing it into a specific genre; but hey, who cares, it’s a hell of a tune. And on top of that, you can download it totally FREE! Turn up the bass and let this one kick!
Ok, so we are a bit late on this one, but this is a work that I feel is too good and too important for you guys to miss. Last week, up-and-coming rapper from LA known as Adam the Bard released his debut Fast Forward Mixtape, and it is nothing short of excellent. At Funkadelphia, we tend to focus a bit more on electronic music, but sometimes we come across artists of other genres of music that we feel just NEED to be shared, and this is one of those times.
Adam the Bard’s debut mixtape is a follow-up from his first LP, The Story of Fast Forward, and continues the story that the LP introduced. The young west-coast rapper brings a unique style in his mixtape, as it tells the story of a fictional rapper, Fast Forward, as he becomes famous and deals with the changes that come with his newfound fame as it affects both himself and his relationship with his wife. The mixtape also tells the story of that relationship. Through powerful lyricism and great story telling ability, Fast Forward takes us on a musical journey making it easy to get caught up in the life of someone following his dream, paralleling the experiences of the real-life artist, Adam, as he is following his dreams and does not know what the future has in store for him.
Even though Adam the Bard has only been rapping since July of 2011, he has already given performances at the House of Blues Dallas and been featured on Coast2Coast mixtapes hosted by Kendrick Lamar and Wale, respectively. On top of that, he will be a guest on a Phresh n Phamous radio show along with Jae Millz which you can stream this Monday, February 25! The mixtape is available for free download from Datpiff, so grab this work of art now and show him some love on Facebook so you can watch this up-and-comer progress as he is sure to blow up soon! We’ve included some of our favorite picks below, but you can stream the entire mixtape at the datpiff link!
Easily one of the most premier festivals for the Northeast, Camp Bisco, curated of course by The Disco Biscuits, will return this year to Indian Lookout Country Club in beautiful upstate New York. The festival will take place from July 11th-13th. We were lucky enough to make it up to Camp last year for our first Bisco experience, and to say “pleased” would be a bit of an understatement. With two massive main stages, setup side by side for rapid change-off between acts, and two dance tents, the festival has more than enough to offer; not to mention the late night,, silent disco DJ tent as well. This year the festival promises to return with just as much force, as well as plenty of new surprises, and definitely plenty of smiling faces. The lineup this year is even more eclectic and jaw-dropping as ever, boasting jam bands STS9, Lotus,Umphrey’s McGee, The Werks, Twiddle and Zoogma(and yes of course The Biscuits); a few very impressive indie acts including Passion Pit, Animal Collective and Dan Deacon; and of course a premier list of DJs and electronic acts including Bassnectar, Flux Pavilion, Boys Noize, UZ, Aeroplane, Baauer, Break Science, Cherub, Crizzly, Eskmo, Gramatik, Heroes + Villains, KOAN Sound, Manic Focus, Paper Diamond, Toro Y Moi, Wick-It the Instigator and lots more. This year looks to be an amazing year to spend a wonderful weekend in upstate New York; hope you’ll be camping with us!
Sometimes I have these difficult, intense internal struggles with myself over whether I enjoy heavy bass or jammy rhythms more; so it’s not hard to understand why a band like Lotus essentially can’t do wrong. They kick out the jams but have plenty of that electronic influence, especially in more recent years. Their new album, Build, is certainly a testament to this, breaking out hard with “Break Build Burn” slamming down some heavy guitar lines, but also providing plenty of whirling synth grooves as well. From there the album only gets better; and while it’s no stretch to say that this album has a stronger electronic focus than Lotus’ previous works, it also exists in a time when the world seems to be obsessed with electronic music. You can’t blame a band like Lotus for getting involved, especially when their music remains so true to it’s nature, roots and style. I could even say this album reminds me a bit of some of STS9‘s work; but at the same time, Lotus still brings their sound cascading through the bleeps and bloops that echo throughout Build.
Whether you know him through his street art or his music, Get Up is undoubtedly an influential artist who has left his mark here in Philadelphia. This Valentine’s Day he released his latest album, Wheatpaste & Heartbreak completely FREE for the masses to enjoy. On top of that, he also has just released the official music video for the album’s lead track and single, “Lonely Nights”. The music video helps bridge the gap between Get Up’s musical and street art talents, showing off his artistic process as the song dances over a montage of the Philly artist hard at work. He keeps himself free of any specific constraints too, playing with bass music from the ranges of mellow hip-hop instrumentals, to hard-hitting dubstep, and quite a few nice glitchy tunes. And if you’re just now getting familiar with Get Up, then I’m sure this will be a great introduction; enjoy!
Artifakts is an up-and-coming producer we have featured on the site several times before, and with each track we get we can see the Wisconsin producer grow more and more. Today we have for you a mash-up of an Artifakts original with vocals from rap artist Trinidad James‘ hit “All Gold Everything.” The beat has some nice chilled out vibes that compliment the vocals very well. If you love those laidback, funky sounds behind some smooth rap lyrics then this song is just for you! As usual from the young producer, this song is absolutely FREE! As usual, crank up those speakers, sit back, and enjoy!
How can you possibly go wrong with a name like Space Jesus? Answer: you don’t. Local producer Jasha Tull has been laying down some seriously psychedelic grooves these last few months. His newest track is an edit of Shpongle‘s track, “Periscopes of Conciousness”. If you like trap, you’re going to be a fan; if you like dub, you’re going to be a fan; if you like psy-trance you’re going to be a fan. Somehow Space Jesus seems to bring all these genres together into a beautiful toned out mess of a track that’ll leave you slipping in and out of reality. Enjoy!
Whoop, change of pace. I’m here today to talk about a band that has been making a lot of noise in the indie world the passed few years. I was lucky enough to catch them at Bonnarooa few years ago, and this year they will be headlining Coachella. I am, of course, talking about French pop/rock band, Phoenix. These guys have been climbing the charts one album at a time, and with their newest one slated for an April 22nd release, the band has just released the first track from Bankrupt! At first listen, it sounds, well, like Phoenix. The band has definitely kept true to themselves, and while I hope the album brings a bit more variety to light, this new track is definitely a nice sneak peek of what’s to come.
